Kuudes Linja

Between Hakaniemi and Sörnäinen metros, this is the place to find Helsinki’s more experimental beats from top visiting DJs playing techno, industrial, post-rock and electro. There are also live gigs.

Corona Baari & Kafe Mockba

Those offbeat film-making Kaurismäki brothers are up to their old tricks with this pair of conjoined drinking dens. Corona plays the relative straight man with pool tables, no doorperson, an island bar and a relaxed mix of people. Mockba is back in the USSR with a bubbling samovar and Soviet vinyl. At closing they clear the place out by playing Brezhnev speeches.
Downstairs in Corona Dubrovnik is open for events: cinema screenings and album launches.

Aussie Bar

Run by descendants of convicts with plenty of ‘G’days’, this laid-back pub doesn’t miss a cliché. Beneath the corrugated iron and faux-colonial fittings it makes for a good watering hole that’s popular with locals. There’s a good range of Down-Under beers and wines. It gets very upbeat and raucous on weekends, when there’s a €3 admission charge.

Los Cojones

A lighthearted Spanish theme here is backed up by hanging hams, wine barrels, guitars and bullfight posters. It’s an atmospheric spot for a glass of wine or shot of oaky Jerez brandy and gets very lively later. You can soak it up with a range of Basque-style pintxos (canapes).

Mbar

Not just a geek haunt with internet terminals, this cafe-bar in the Lasipalatsi complex has a great terrace to soak up the sun, accompanied by DJs on most summer nights. It’s one of Helsinki’s most enjoyable spots, with great atmosphere.
